Comments:

·         This Kriti is in the second Vibhakti

·         Vak or speech is classified as four: Paraa, Pashyanti, Madhyama and Vaikhari. They range from the subtlest to the grossest.  Vaikhari is the audible or spoken word.

·         mUlAdhAra-kshEtra-sthitam – This can also mean “one who is seated in the Muladhara Chakra”. Tiruvarur, the Kshetra of this Kriti, is the place on earth which corresponds to this Chakra of the subtle body.

·         parA Adi-catvAri-vAg AtmakaM” : Vyakarana exponents have said that the grammatical form of this phrase should be “parAdi-catur-vAgAtmakam”. It is possible that Dikshitar has phrased it the way it is, since the four types of Vak are mentioned in the Rg Veda as “catvAri vAk parimitA padaani”. There is also another word “catvAraka” which means “a collection of four”(Monier Williams Dictionary), which might have been the word used here.

·         “praNava-svarUpa-vakra-tuNDaM” (the one whose bent trunk has the shape of Om): When Ganesha’s trunk is bent towards his right, the face and trunk together resemble the letter Om as written in Tamil or Devanagari. In such a form, he is known as “Valanchuzhi Vinayakar”. Vatapi Ganapati in Tiruvarur indeed has such a form.

·         tri-kONa-madhya-gataM : Vatapi Ganapati in Tiruvarur is seated inside a vertical, isosceles triangle, where the two equal sides are somewhat curved, making it resemble a Modaka. The phrase can also be taken to indicate  Ganesha's position in the Sri Chakra.

·         Vatapi Ganapati is the form of Ganesha worshipped by Agastya for succeeding in his mission to defeat the demons Ilvala and Vatapi. There is also a belief that the shrine in Tiruvarur was installed similar to the one in Tiruchengattankudi, where the Ganapati is called Vatapi Ganapti since the idol was brought from Vatapi by the Pallava general Paranjothi (later Siruthonda Nayanar). The Pallava king Narasimhavarma conquered Vatapi(now Badami), the capital of the Chalukyas, in the 7th Century.
