Namaste

In the pallavi ,the meaning given for 'kara dhruta shuka sharike' is 'holding A parakeet as a pet..' In my humble opinion shuka sharike' means a male and a female parrot. I chanced to read some stavan in which 2 parrots are mentioned where the male is shuka n female is sharika. Kindly look into this

Warm regards

Rajani Arjun Shankar said...

Dear Rasika,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have not seen any image of the goddess with two birds, nor read any similar description. Shaarika, as per dictionaries, could particularly mean a bird which we today call Mynah, or in general mean any pet bird. i have taken the latter here.

The following is the link where sharika is described to be a female parrot

The image given in this link is that of Shri Rajashyamala with 2 parrots , one in each hand.

I agree that Rajashyamala n Kamalambika are not the same deities. However there might be a possibility that the alankaram done to her on the particular day this krithi was composed was that of Rajashyamala

Unknown said...

Rajashyamala has 2 parrots in her hand. She is the ninth dasha mahavidya(as per internet sources). This ghanta krithi is the ninth one (including the dhyana krithi). There might be a connection then.It is only my presumption based on whatever i have read. Thank you for patient replies

Dikshitar was a SrI vidyA - lalitA mahAtripurasundari - upAsaka. tiruvArUr kamalAmbikA is another name of lalitA mahAtripurasundari. upAsana paddhati differs for each of the ten vidyAs. Once an upAsaka accepts - through Diksha- a vidyA, he adheres to that only. Therefore, it may not be appropriate to bring in a different vidyA in Dikshitar kRti - particularly this being eighth AvaraNa kRti of navAvaraNa. Let's not mix mahA vidyAs and navAvaraNas.

Thank you very much

Respected madam,

The Lalitha Trishati nama 286. Hreem kaara taru shaarika clearly indicates that she is shaarika herself. Whether it means parrot or mynah is beyond my comprehension. But then, here, in this krithi Shri Deekshitar seems to have addressed her(being sambodhana vibhakti) as o shaarike , one who holds shuka in her hand. Please ruminate on this.

Sir/Madam,
You are taking the word 'SArikA' in the lalitA triSati out of context. The full meaning of the epithet 'hrIMkAra taru SArikA' is that lalitA mahAtripurasundari Herself is the SArikA in the 'tree' called hrIMkAra. This has no connection with kamalAmbA at tiruvArUr or kamalAmbA navAvaraNa. Let us not flog the issue further. If you are not convinced, then you may kindly seek clarifications from people knowledgeable on the subject. With whatever little knowledge we - the developers and the translators - have, the meanings have been given. In any case, your comment and responses thereof are available for other viewers for their consideration.
Thank you,
V Govindan
